Description ^

This is a two-semester course offering entry-level to advanced training in the design and development of web sites. Instruction includes working with web authoring software, the creation of HTML files and graphics for the web, web site development and management. Employment opportunities in the field would include, webmaster, web designer, computer operator, administrative secretary and office assistant.

Equipment may include IBM compatible or Macintosh computers, scanners, printers, digital cameras and data displays.

To enroll in this class, you should have basic computer skills. A familiarity with desktop publishing and/or graphic design will also be helpful, as will a background in art.

Basic Skills ^

As a part of the general instruction of this course, reinforcement of basic skills is provided to assist students in practicing communication skills, speaking clearly using standard English, utilizing listening skills to follow directions, gaining information and reading to perform assignments and tasks as directed. Students receive instruction in safety procedures and practice as they relate to computers and their use.

Course Goals ^

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of basic computer concepts
  • operate a computer running under the Windows operating system
  • use the Internet and World Wide Web as a communications tool
  • design, develop and implement web sites
  • demonstrate workplace skills and behaviors

Course Content ^

This course consists of 2.5 hours lecture/presentation per week and 2.5 hours of lab time per week. Generally, each class meeting will consist of group instruction followed by self-paced lab time. The purpose of lab time is to provide the student with the opportunity to reinforce new knowledge and skills through monitored practice and application.

by Robin Williams, John Tollett (Paperback)
The Regional Occupational Program will provide all High School students with a loaned copy of this text.  Students are expected to return the book in good condition at the end of the course.
Suggested reference:  Any Dreamweaver or HTML text reference of your choice .

NOTE:   For the purpose of backing up your work on a regular basis - consider supplying yourself with some form of removable media - preferrably a USB Flash drive (the smallest capacity available will do).

Attendance ^

Student attendance is required on a prompt and regular basis.  New concepts and procedures will be presented at the beginning of every class meeting.  If you miss a class , it will be your responsibility to make up the work. Plan in advance to commit yourself to the class and meet your obligations.

Unless prior notification has been given, excessive absenteeism will be cause for dismissal.

Grading Policy ^

Student performance will be evaluated on the basis of completed lab work, assigned projects, in-class quizzes and tests, class participation and attendance. Letter grades will be based on the following criteria:

Grade: Description: Percentage:
A Excellent 90% or higher
B Above Average 80-89%
C Average 70-79%
D Below Average 60-69%
F Failing 59% or lower

In addition to letter grades, the Regional Occupational Program offers the following three awards:

  • Certificate of Competency - awarded for regular participation during the course
  • Certificate of Achievement - occupational Competencies List -
    a list of the individual competencies achieved
  • Outstanding Student Award - awarded to one student per semester
